One year ago, Evan "Sweet" Hansen portaged 300 miles across Minnesota to honor the lives of people lost to suicide. Along the way, he raised more than $50,000 for NAMI Southeast Minnesota and shared one message again and again: "You're not alone. You're not a burden. And you are loved." (Read more about his journey here.)
NAMI SE MN is thrilled to partner with Evan on the Portage for a Purpose 5k, tracing the steps of the final 5k of his journey last fall.
You are invited to bring canoes, flowers, or just yourself as we portage (since the burden of suicide never truly leaves us) to honor those who lost their lives to suicide and raise awareness and funds for suicide prevention.
The 5k will be up a steep hill along County Rd. M from Bluff Siding Road (near George's Lounge) to Eternity Rock in Kinstone. Following the walk, we will take time to write messages to those we have lost to suicide and send them up in a bonfire.
Refreshments, light snacks and shuttles will be provided. You do not need to participate in the portage to attend the fire ceremony, but a $10 cash fee is required to enter Kinstone. Thank you to Kinstone for donating 50% of all admissions on October 8th to NAMI.
